Barn Cat Placement Program

The Barn Cat Placement Program provides a non-lethal alternative for feral cats—cats that have been lost or abandoned and have reverted to a wild state, or were born to a stray or feral mother and have had little or no human contact.

Through Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) programs, ferals typically are returned to their colony or location after being neutered and vaccinated.

But in some cases, due to traffic, predators, or inhospitable neighbors, returning cats to their colony or original location may threaten their safety. Our Barn Cat Placement Program may be able to help.  It is also a solution for domesticated cats that have behavioral problems when living inside, or that are not adoptable for reasons such as shyness or territoriality. If you are the caretaker of a cat that meets any of these descriptions, or a barn owner looking to give a cat a home and in return have rodent problems addressed, we may be able to help.

Caretaker Responsibilities

Before SCFAW can place one or more cats in a barn, you must ensure that all cats are all of the following:

  • Spayed or neutered
  • Vaccinated against rabies and distemper
  • Deemed healthy by a vet (combo tested for disease and examined)

Furthermore, you must provide all of the following:

  • Bedding
  • Litter box and litter
  • Food and water bowls
  • At least a week’s worth of food
  • The medical records providing proof of spay/neuter and vaccination

In turn, SCFAW will provide large 8x4x3-feet enclosures for the month-long acclimation process and set the cat(s) up in their new barn home.

Once they are released from these enclosures, the barn owner provides daily food and water, and the cats are free to live out their lives with shelter and as much—or as little—attention as they care to seek. Placement is provided at no cost to the barn owner.

If you are either the cat caretaker or a barn owner, feel free to email or phone us (978)779-8287.
