About UsSecond Chance Fund for Animal Welfare (SCFAW) was officially founded in 2001 with the goal of curbing the suffering of homeless cats in Central Massachusetts by preventing the tragedy before it begins. We achieve this by offering affordable, accessible spay and neuter services for pet cats and tame strays. We also offer counseling on difficult pet issues and care for catastrophic illness or injury of dogs and cats from economically challenged households. By spay/neutering pet cats of households that cannot afford this vital one-time surgery through other means, we reduce the risk that these cats will become lost or abandoned due to nuisance behaviors of intact cats. Staying in their homes means fewer cats will find their way into the streets and proliferate there. Staying in their homes means fewer will be rounded up and brought to shelters by Animal Control and others. This in turn helps the shelters avoid overcrowding with homeless cats and kittens, leaving space for pet cats needing rehoming. Through the support of more than 100 volunteers, local veterinarians and community partners, coupled with focused leadership, our efforts to help more animals live healthier, happier lives have blossomed. To date, we have altered more than 12,000 cats, a remarkable achievement for our small, grassroots organization. By educating and counseling people, we support pets staying in their homes and nurturance of the vital human-animal bond. There is no love quite like the unconditional love of a pet. And we have made it our mission that everyone should be able to take care of a reasonable number of pets in order to share that love.
